What is Gulet?

DSC_0140Gulet, from the French golette (schooner), is a traditional Turkish broad-beamed wooden coastal sailing vessel with a raised bow, a broad, flat stern, a main foremast and secondary mast aft. Turkey’s wooden gulets are configured with powerful diesel engines to provide primary power, and sails to provide additional power, or primary power in strong winds. This means you can sail silently when the wind allows, but go wherever you want reliably with motor power.

Gulets are particularly good as pleasure sailing vessels because of their broad beam, which gives them lots of deck space—particularly aft—and plenty of rooms for spacious cabins. Turkish gulets come in many sizes, from small 50 foot-long craft with the necessary equipment to large, luxurious 110 foot air-conditioned vessels with every convenience and luxury. A gulet may have from three to ten two-guest cabins (for 6 to 20 guests), but gulets with between four and six cabins accommodating up to 10 to 12 travelers are most common. A gulet’s public area includes an elegant galley with large picture windows, a spacious lounge furnished with rich fabrics and open bar. Yacht also has two broad decks for sunbathing and a swimming platform. The stern deck of a gulet is broad, fitted with a low, wide cushioned bench all around which is perfect for lounging, reading, relaxing or napping.

The stern deck area, shaded by an awning if the sun is hot, is large enough for a table for games, drinks or exquisite al fresco meals. There are plenty of sun loungers and mattresses for guests to enjoy the Mediterranean sun.

Our itineraries are designed to cruise or sail for an average of three-four hour a day. Gulets in many ways are like small full-service hotels with a constantly changing sea view. There is also no better way of enjoying a cooling swim, whilst at anchor in turquoise waters. Travelers reach the welcoming warm water any time via comfortable ladder descending far into the water.

Crew includes a captain, a gourmet chef, and one or two sailors. They have their own cabin with separate en-suite facilities for their convenience. Our crews on our boats are trained to provide the finest service that will exceed your expectations.

Eon Tours classifies gulets into three different categories: traditional, luxury, and deluxe. The minimum configuration for each yacht category is as follows:

  • Traditional:
With 60-80 feet LOA, gulets have 4-8 cabins accommodating up to 12 guests. All cabins with en-suite bathrooms and shower, spacious indoor saloon and outdoor aft deck, fully equipped galley, separate crew quarters, fishing and snorkeling equipment, generator, 24 hour hot water, windsurf, canoe, stereo music system and VHF radio, sails, and dinghy. Air conditioning is available on some gulets.
  • Superior:
80-110 feet LOA, 4-8 cabins or up to 16 guests. All spacious cabins have large en-suite bathrooms and shower, large indoor saloon and roomy aft deck, fully equipped galley, separate crew quarters, fishing and snorkeling equipment, two generators, 24 hour hot water, windsurf, canoe, dinghy, sails, stereo music system, VHF radio, television, and ice maker. All vessels have individual air conditioning units in each cabin.
  • Luxury:
90-110 feet LOA, 5-6 master suites for up to 12 guests. All master cabins resemble guests rooms in a fine home-beautifully furnished, comfortably arranged, and complete with the amenities one would expect form a thoughtful host: large port holes, individual air-conditioning, generous storage space, TV/VCR/DVD, mini refrigerator, and the tiled bathroom with shower. Extraordinary attention to details transforms the cruising and sailing into a unique experience in these gulets.

During the night and in the marinas, the air-conditioning is turned off to prevent noise from the generators. Total time for the generators on is about seven hours daily. Charter rates include crew, fuel, water, taxes, and harbor expenses. Please consult our office for the specific rates of the different boats.
